What is Precast Concrete Walling?

Concrete concrete wallingSo what is the point and benefits of precast concrete walls?

1- Quick Curing Time

As the precast concrete fencing is constructed off site, they are cured before they are installed. This allows the fence to be set immediately upon installation, which will keep the fence from developing cracks or water damage if it rains or weather temperatures rise or fall quickly. Poured concrete has to be poured when temperatures are at between 5 and 32 degrees, and allowed to cure for at least a week. This makes it difficult to find the right time to pour the concrete in some locations, and then allow it to cure without damage.

2 - Cleaner Method

Precast concrete fencing is formed in molds made to specifications of the fencing measurements. This is done off site in a factory setting which helps to keep the mess to a minimum as opposed to poured concrete which is mixed on site.

3 - Appearance

Another advantage of precast walling is that it is carefully measured, and each piece made individually to look professional and very uniform in appearance. Another note on appearance, is that you have options as far as textures and colors. It can be textured or painted, allowing you to match the fence to your homes exterior.

4 - Durability

Precast concrete is made in a temperate setting and allowed to properly cure before installation. It is very durable. When poured concrete is set on site, there is the chance that it will not cure properly, thus the possibility of it having issues later on.

5 - Quick Installation

Once the measurements are taken, the forms are poured and cured off site, then they are brought on site to erect the fence. This goes quickly which allows you to get your project done faster.

What type of maintenance is required?

precast concrete fenceIf you install a precast concrete wall or fence, virtually no maintenance is necessary. You can, however, paint it if you wish to change the colour, but, as colour is added during the manufacture process, it is not necessary to paint, unless, as stated, you wish to have a colour change.

You will never have to pay for painting, oiling , resealing or rust removal, etc. You will only need to wash the wall periodically should it get dirty. This is a simple task, using your garden hose.

As individual components can be replaced should they get damaged, repairing the walls is equalling uncomplicated, and inexpensive, as you do not have to do repairs to the entire structure.

Precast Concrete Wall Repairs

concrete crackIf your Concrete Wall has developed hairline cracks or small holes, you can and should repair it immediately to avoid the damage growing and causing a weak spot in your security.

Firstly, clean the area around the cracks or small holes using coarse sandpaper. Make sure you remove all dirt and dust from the wall.

Next, you need to soak the area around the small holes or cracks and keep wet for a few hours. Doing this will prevent the dry concrete from absorbing the water from the cement grout once you have applied it.

Mix the cement and water in a metal bucket to form a thick. Smooth grout. You need to stir continuously to prevent any lumps from forming.

Next you need to fill the hairline crack with the cement, using a trowel. You can use the trowel handle tip to pack the grout firmly and fully into the holes. Always press and spread the grout into the crack and over the edges, then smooth the grout down with the flat side of your trowel.

Cover the repaired cracks and holes with large plastic sheet, which you must tape with duct tape.

For 5 days, you need to dampen the repaired cracks or holes with a little water, then cover again. Do this every single day for the 5 days.

You can then apply a silane-based sealant to the repairs and a few cms all around the cracks or holes, to ensure a good, stable seal. Use a synthetic bristle paint brush for this.

Honeycomb in ConcreteMake sure you check your walls regularly for any sign or cracks or holes, then repair immediately to prevent any cracks extending or widening, and holes enlarging.

Security is very important today, and in no way must you allow any cracks or holes to stay unattended, thus giving would-be intruders an easy way into your property.

We, at Country Wide Walling, seriously recommend that you get the professionals to do any mending or replacing on your precast concrete walls, as this will ensure that the repairs will be done professionally and last a very long time.
