Electrified palisade fences

electrified palisadeAn electrified palisade fence is a steel or aluminium palisade fence used as a defensive barrier for the protection of property, particularly in isolated regions.

Typical construction

Electrified palisade fences are usually made from painted mild steel, galvanized steel, stainless steel or aluminium. Typically the fences are 2.4 metres (7 ft 10 in). All electric fences have energisers which send high voltage electric pulses through the palisade, usually at a frequency of 1 Hertz (one pulse per second).

Uses

The two most common uses of electrified palisade fencing is in protecting isolated property and in the defence of high security facilities. Palisade electric fences are used in most countries, particularly where there is little vegetation to short circuit the fence or where the costs of security personnel is high in relation to automated security equipment.

Isolated property is vulneelectrified fencingrable in that it is difficult or time consuming to send security personnel to respond and so must be self sufficient with an automated security system. The electric pulse is a strong deterrent for criminals, while the palisade fence is mechanically stronger than a typical steel cable electric fence being able to withstand impact from wildlife, small falling trees and wildfires.

South Africa

Due to the high levels of crime in South Africa, it is common for residential houses to have perimeter defences. The City of Johannesburg promotes the use of palisade fencing over opaque, usually brick, walls as criminals cannot hide as easily behind the fence. In the City of Johannesburg manual on safety one can read about best practices and maintenance of palisade fencing, such as not growing vegetation in front of palisades as this allows criminals to make an unseen breach.

How to paint palisade fencing

how to paint a palisade fence
When you go to the expense of installing palisade fencing around your home, you want it to not only provide security but look good too. Because palisade fencing is generally made of steel - it requires regular maintenance to keep it in tip-top condition. Here are some tips from Plascon Metalcare on painting and maintaining a palisade fence.

STEP 1:

Use Plascon RemovALL All Purpose Paint Remover to remove all flaking and peeling paint. This product is a brushable,water-based paint remover that is biodegradable, user-friendly and environmentally safe. It is extremely effective in removing the toughest industrial coatings, like epoxies and urethanes, from metal, concrete, wood, masonry, and brick. Any rust can be treated by using Polycell End Rust to create an impervious film on the metal. Please note that a rust remover/converter should not be used on galvanised iron.metalcare degreaser

GOOD TO KNOW

On walls with palisade panels, place newspaper under the fencing to prevent drips and runs.

STEP 2:

Apply Plascon Metalcare Waterbased Degreaser to the fence and rinse well with clean water. Allow to dry.
Plascon Metalcare Waterbased Degreaser is a non-abrasive and fully biodegradable water- and citrus-based cleaner that removes oil, grease and grime from surfaces.

STEP 3:
Use a paint brush to apply Plascon Metalcare Waterbased Primer for an extremely high protective barrier. The unique red oxide formulation gives great protection against metal corrosion and degradation.

GOOD TO KNOW
Start at the top of the fencing and work your way down. That way you take care of any drips or runs.

STEP 4:steel palisade fence

Finish your fence off with 2 coats of Plascon Waterbased Enamel for a durable long-lasting and chalk-resistant finish.
Plascon Waterbased Enamel is available in a wide range of tinted colours. Regular maintenance will ensure the lifespan of your palisade fencing and it's important to repair paint chips as quickly as possible to prevent the formation of rust. Keep the base of your palisade fencing clear of obstacles that may prevent the normal flow of water. Puddles around the base of the fence will eventually cause paint to peel and rust to set in.

Where rust stops occur - take the necessary steps as soon as possible
