There are things a criminal finds very off-putting when they are scouting for a house to break into. We are all aware of the high crime rate in South Africa, so here are a few tips from a burglar to avoid making your house an easy target.
Make sure there are no thick shrubs or trees around your house, especially near windows or doors.
Avoid privacy fences as they provide easy hiding places for criminals and they are safe from being detected by anyone passing by your house.
Make sure you have good exterior lighting. A very good option is a motion sensor floodlight, as it will immediately let you know that something is going on.
Keep your car in the garage, especially if it is a new or expensive model, and keep your garage locked.
It is a good idea to avoid exposing your assets inside the house through a window. It is very easy for passers-by to see what you have, and is an open invitation to any would-be intruder. Keeps curtains or blinds closed.
If you have purchased new items, don’t just discard the boxes and packaging on the pavement. It is a dead give-away.
Rip them up and conceal them to avoid advertising to passers-by.
Remember, no burglary is spur of the moment. A criminal will case the neighbourhood and take note of the times when you leave and come home, how many residents there are, and whether there is anyone home at all times.
Make friends with your neighbours, and if any of your neighbours does not go out to work, it is a plus for you as it will make your house a risk for breaking into.
Do not leave things like ladders or wheelbarrows or any item which can be used to climb lying around. You can be sure it will be welcomed by an intruder and make it easier for them to either get in, or to get out for a quick getaway.
A couple of dogs are a big bonus. Even little yappers. It is very off-putting trying to break in and a dog is barking consistently. Little yappers are a very good addition to your security.
Don’t put up a specific security company sticker, as there are criminals who could know how to disable the security of a specific company. Get a general generic sticker instead.
A good boundary fence with added protection like electric fence or razor wire or even a topping is your first line of defence. Make sure you get your security as tight as possible and keep your home and family safe.
