Electric Fences for Shocking Crime

hole in fence

A good and very potent front-line deterrent to any potential intruder, is the obvious physical presence of electric fence security, with the bright yellow warning signs.

There are many advantages of electric fencing, e.g.  It will give the potential intruder a nasty shock, and also set off a siren, alerting you that somebody is trying to illegally access your property.   Electric fence security will successfully deny an intruder access to your property.

electric fence palisadeHere in South Africa we pay a fortune to feel secure, by installing burglar alarms, razor wire, guard dogs, armed response, electric fencing, all due to the extremely high rate of crime in our country.

Our family and property are our priorities, and we all do whatever is humanly possible to keep everyone and everything safe.  It is also a very good thing to combine a number of security options, as this is also very off-putting to criminals.

Criminals like an easy target, as well as an easy getaway.  By combining e.g. palisade and electric fencing, we are making our property less inviting.  Palisade has no hiding places, and is not that easy to climb, and if we add razor wire and/or electric fencing to the top of the palisade, our property will lose it’s  appeal to would be intruders.

Make sure that no matter what type of security you implement on your boundary fences, it is installed by a reputable company, and is checked regularly for any attempts at breaching it.

We cannot stress enough that perimeter security is an important aspect of the safety of your family and property.

More Palisade Security Options

colourful palisadesPalisade fencing need not be off-putting to you because of aesthetic appeal.  There is always the option of good, thorny plants to plant at the base of the palisade to provide even more appeal and security.

Fire-thorn is always a good option for extra security, as nobody wants to mess with those thorns, but be careful if you have small children or animals, as the thorns can really be very mean, and cause pretty serious injury.

An English rambling rose is also good as it will give blooms annually and be beautiful to look at, even though the thorns can cause injury to anyone trying to climb the fence.

firethorn pyracantha berriesEuphorbia Milii or Crown of thorns is also a good deterrent.  It is a succulent, climbing shrub which can grow to 1.8m in height and has densely spiny stems.   The flowers are very pretty and come in red, pink or white, and up to 12mm wide, so it offers a very aesthetic appeal.

The sap, however is moderately poisonous, and causes irritation on contact with skin or eyes.  It causes severe stomach pain if ingested, as well as irritation of the throat and mouth, and vomiting.  No intruder would want to mess with this plant, as it can have serious consequences.

If you should use any of these plants to increase your security, make sure you wear goggles and thick gloves if you need to do any pruning of the shrubs.

No Place to Hide

green palisadeWhether you choose palisade or solid walls, your main concern is security for your property, family and belongings.

There are many options for security walling, and a lot to take into account when choosing what is best for you.

Not only do you want security, aesthetic appeal is also a must, as it enhances not only the look of the property, but also the value.

treesShould you choose palisade fencing, there are also options available to you. Palisade fencing comes in concrete, or steel.   Palisade is a great off-putter to would be intruders, as it offers no privacy or hiding places for them once they enter your property, but it is also not as private for you as a solid wall would be.

The fact that it offers no cover for intruders is a good reason to use palisade, as intruders can easily be seen from the road

You should always use either a low brick fence as base, or a concrete apron on which to build your palisade, as you do not want intruders being able to dig under the fence to gain entry. Make sure you have a good foundation, so that it is too difficult to dig under to gain access to your property.

Palisade can also be used as a topping on brick or concrete walls.  This will prevent children or animals from slipping out of your property and getting into the traffic, as well as being off-putting to would be intruders.

Always make sure that you do not have trees growing close to your boundary walls, as this is an easy way for intruders to gain entry.

Perimeter Fencing for High-Security Protection

wall securityWith security our priority, and the first line of defence around our premises, boundary fence security is vitally important.

Appropriate high-security fencing can act as an effective deterrent to would be criminal intruders.
In today’s continued criminal climate in South Africa, we need to be sure that we have done the best we can, to defend our properties and hard-earned goods.  We pay for whatever we have in our homes, so we need to make sure that we keep everything safe from free-loading shoppers with criminal intent.

With our perimeter fencing as our first line of defence, there are various options available to us, electric fencing, electronic surveillance, CCTV systems, razor wire, etc.  In most cases we need a combination of these options to give us relative peace of mind.

Boundary security is necessary for the following reasons:

1.      Deters some intruders from gaining access
2.      Is off-putting to some would-be intruders
3.    Detects determined intruders when they attempt to access your property or try to remove anything.
4.    Delays and aids in apprehending would-be intruders

Pitfalls to Avoid

There are a few common pitfalls we can avoid to ensure our safety. trees

  • Always repair holes, as they provide easy access.
  • Have no trees close to fencing as they can be used to climb over the fencing.
  • Do not leave rubbish bins out on the pavement, as they provide aid in climbing over fencing.
  • Make sure you do regular checks to make sure that nobody is secretly digging a hole under your fencing, or that someone is chipping away at your walls, bit by bit, and make sure that trees are cut back to avoid easy access if you do have them close to walls or fencing.

The best remedy for trees is to remove them and only plant at a safe distance from all boundary security.  Plant prickly plants like the fire thorn at the base of your walling or fence, they are not plants to mess with.

Should you notice any of these things, it is wise to get it all sorted out quickly so as not to compromise all your security.

Please do not hesitate to contact us to discuss which options are best for you, or to request a free quotation.

Crime Prevention Boundary Protection

fire thornThere are many ways to make it difficult for criminals to access your property.   You need to make it as unattractive a prospect as possible.

Boundary fences need to be high and of good quality with a topping that will deter anyone from attempting to climb over.

A good perimeter wall would be a low wall with palisades so that there is no place for an intruder to hide if they do get in.   Topping the palisades with spikes is a good idea and an extra deterrent.

Wall foundations need to be deep too, to prevent anyone digging their way in. If you need to allow for runoff water, pipes can be built into the bottom of the walls at intervals.

An excellent deterrent is to have a trellis on the top of the fence and a thorny plant growing over the trellis.   Nobody likes their hands cut to pieces, or the pain of the thorns digging in deep.  Prickly bushes and hedges around your garden can also act as a deterrent.

pyrancantha firethornTrellis won’t support weight, and besides being noisy when it breaks, it will also bring the thorny plant down on whoever is trying to climb over, and can cause some real bad damage to a would be criminal.

Pyrocanthus (aka fire thorn) is a good option, but takes a bit of time to grow properly.   A rambling rose is also good.  It is thorny but has the advantage of aesthetic appeal when blooming.

The only drawback to these plants is that they will need to be pruned to keep them looking good, but is still a small price to pay for security.

This is another idea to keep you safe and protect your property.
