Are You Covered

electric fence extentionWith the release of crime statistics in our country, it is obvious that crime has escalated at an alarming rate this past year.

Many people are looking at improving their security in a bid to prevent becoming another crime statistic.

Whether you have concrete or prefab walling, or palisades, you are able to add an electric fence as a further deterrent to would be intruders, and an electric fence has now become a common sight in South Africa.

If you wish to extend the height of your walling or fencing, then adding an electric fence is a very good option, but always ensure that the correct fence is added and that the installation is correctly done.

cctv cameraElectric fences are used to detect, deter and delay an intruder from entering your property illegally, plus a high voltage shock should be enough to discourage anyone attempting to access your property uninvited.  It also allows your back-up security company to respond timeously.

Energizers supply the fence with power and come with batteries so that they operate even when there is a power outage.

The more security you have, the safer you will be.  It is also a good idea to have infrared sensors installed.

It is advisable to install an electric fence on a wall or fence that is not less than 1.5m high as this will prevent injury to animals or children.   The electric fence should also have at least 8 strands of electric wire to discourage any attempts to tamper with it.

Should you wish to install a new wall or fence or to extend an existing one, please feel free to contact us and discuss your requirements with one of our consultants, or request a free quotation today.

First Impressions Count

wall crumblingIn South Africa today, perimeter security is a major concern for homeowners, and if you are planning on selling your property then it is a very important point to keep in mind.

What is the first thing anyone sees when they approach your property?

Your boundary wall or fence.

First impressions count.   If your boundary wall is shabby, not properly maintained and is cracking or pealing, then it does not matter how well your house is maintained, the look of your boundary wall will be the impression indelibly printed in a potential buyer’s mind.

The impression will cause the potential buyer to believe that your house is not as well maintained as it appears to be.

It is best to repair or replace boundary walls before putting your property on the market.  That way you are assured of a much better price and an easier sale.

Your boundary wall or fence should always enhance and add to the aesthetic beauty of your property.

Potential buyers will also be keeping their eye on the security value of the boundary wall or fence.  Your fencing or walling should not look distinctly inferior in any way to any of your neighbours.

This is when keeping up with the Joneses is an effective route to follow.  Security is important, so your walling or fencing should show that it is a priority for you too.

It is always a good idea to go out of your property to take a really long hard look at your property to get the real street view of where your property stands in the security and aesthetic beauty of the area.

If all your neighbours have electric fencing and palisades and you do not, it will be immediately noticeable to potential buyers.  You do not want your property to stick out like a sore thumb.

Many property owners have chosen to raise their walls or fences by adding electric fencing or palisades to existing structures.  This enhances the security and is also aesthetically pleasing.

palisade on wallsAlways choose a quality product and a trustworthy team for all your walling needs.   Whether you wish to replace an existing wall or fence, or raise it to obtain more security, cutting corners can and will backfire on you when it comes to selling your property.

Your boundary wall or fence should always be something that you can be proud of and which will enhance the value of your property and add to its aesthetic beauty.

Precast Concrete Retaining Walls

stone retaining wallEven though stone or brick are the traditional style for retaining walls, you need to ask the question:

Are these really the best materials for the job?

The whole purpose of a retaining wall in residential areas is to correct the natural slope of the ground.   You need a level area for gardening.

Retaining walls need a huge amount of strength, endurance and also be weather resistant. This enables you to have a lot more use of your property.

Over the years as concrete retaining walls came into being, it may be the best material for the job.

addingcolourLet us take a look at some advantages:

1.    Choice:   You can choose between 3 basic structures.  concrete blocks, precast concrete panels, or poured-in-place concrete.
2.    Strength:   Concrete is extremely strong.
3.    Durability:   Concrete walls often last for a century or more.
4.    Ease of Installation:  Usually faster and easier to install than labour intensive masonry structures.
5.    Aesthetic Beauty:   Colour can be added during the manufacturing process so that you have a long lasting beautiful wall.
6.    Low Maintenance:   Cleaning about once a year, plus checks for cracks or wear and tear which are easily repaired.
7.    Affordability:  As the cost is mid-range, it gives you an outstanding cost-benefit ratio.

The only disadvantage of Concrete Retaining walls is that it is NOT a feasible do-it-yourself project.

Your best option in all respects is to get a professional to install your walls with effective support and adequate draining.

This will ensure that your wall will be long-lasting and will give you the aesthetic beauty you require to add value to your property and make a good impression.

Razor Spikes

razor point spikesIf your boundary fence or wall is 1.8m in height, you are able to attach extra security extensions. The total height should not exceed 2m.

Three dimensional razor spikes are very popular as anti-climb protection, and also suitable to top gates.

There is a Razor Spike designed which provides greater strength, and serves as both a physical and psychological barrier to any would be intruder.

These spikes are manufactured from steel and are heavily ribbed during the manufacturing process. This ensures ultimate sharpness and strength.

razor spikes on gateThe spikes are 11cm high and consist of 2 (two) rows of spikes. The inner spike is a thinner and stiletto shaped ribbed spike which is capable of penetrating a foot or any body part coming into contact with it.

The outer spike is barbed and angled outwards overhanging the edge of the structure to which it is attached.

These spikes are virtually impossible to climb over, and are a huge security feature, and have the added advantage that they are maintenance free.

Spikes can be fitted under electric fences, to ensure the extra security and impenetrability we all seek, in order to keep our property and family safe.

razor spike warningSpikes can also be installed under roofs to make it impossible for anyone to climb onto the roof to gain access to your home or business.

As spikes are considered extremely dangerous, they should only be added to walls or fences at a minimum height of 2m. At no time must they be added where there is a possibility of injuring pedestrians.

The spikes must be completely visible and must comply with local laws and regulations in regard to height and positioning. There should also be clear warning signs to prevent any bad repercussions at any time, should an unsuspecting person get seriously injured.

Setting Boundaries

surveyingIt is surprising that there are many people who do not know where the precise edges of their property boundaries are.

Sometimes boundaries are lost because the property has changed hands over the years.  You cannot just assume that the boundary is consistent with the existing fences that are surrounding it.

The basis of many disputes between neighbours is the exact location of the boundary of a property, or the perceived belief that a neighbour is encroaching on your property, either knowingly, or unknowingly.

In general the boundary fence belongs to both owners, and if necessary can be checked by a surveyor.

If a new fence needs to be erected, or an old one needs to be repaired, the cost should be split equally between the two neighbours.  Both property owners have a responsibility to keep the fence in good condition, and neither neighbour is allowed to remove the fence without the permission of the other neighbour.

There are some basic rules which apply to boundary fences.

If you wish to remove or replace an existing wall or fence, it is very important to first consult with the neighbour.  Never attach anything to a fence without consulting with the neighbour.

The same applies if you wish to raise the fence/wall for more security, e.g. attaching lattice to the fencing.

angry neighbourAlways talk to your neighbour about anything pertaining the boundary fence/wall.  Ask for any agreement to be given in writing.

Should your neighbour be difficult and refuse to do their share, it is always best to first seek legal advice.
Talking to your neighbour is the best way, and will prevent any hostilities and unpleasantness.

As we have said before:   Good fences make for good neighbours.

Should you wish to erect a new wall or fence, or raise and existing one, please feel free to contact us and speak to one of our highly trained consultants.  They will be able to advise you on what would be your best option.
