Precast Concrete Wall Repairs

concrete crackIf your Concrete Wall has developed hairline cracks or small holes, you can and should repair it immediately to avoid the damage growing and causing a weak spot in your security.

Firstly, clean the area around the cracks or small holes using coarse sandpaper. Make sure you remove all dirt and dust from the wall.

Next, you need to soak the area around the small holes or cracks and keep wet for a few hours. Doing this will prevent the dry concrete from absorbing the water from the cement grout once you have applied it.

Mix the cement and water in a metal bucket to form a thick. Smooth grout. You need to stir continuously to prevent any lumps from forming.

Next you need to fill the hairline crack with the cement, using a trowel. You can use the trowel handle tip to pack the grout firmly and fully into the holes. Always press and spread the grout into the crack and over the edges, then smooth the grout down with the flat side of your trowel.

Cover the repaired cracks and holes with large plastic sheet, which you must tape with duct tape.

For 5 days, you need to dampen the repaired cracks or holes with a little water, then cover again. Do this every single day for the 5 days.

You can then apply a silane-based sealant to the repairs and a few cms all around the cracks or holes, to ensure a good, stable seal. Use a synthetic bristle paint brush for this.

Honeycomb in ConcreteMake sure you check your walls regularly for any sign or cracks or holes, then repair immediately to prevent any cracks extending or widening, and holes enlarging.

Security is very important today, and in no way must you allow any cracks or holes to stay unattended, thus giving would-be intruders an easy way into your property.

We, at Country Wide Walling, seriously recommend that you get the professionals to do any mending or replacing on your precast concrete walls, as this will ensure that the repairs will be done professionally and last a very long time.

A Criminal’s Tips

burglar proof your gardenThere are things a criminal finds very off-putting when they are scouting for a house to break into.   We are all aware of the high crime rate in South Africa, so here are a few tips from a burglar to avoid making your house an easy target.

Make sure there are no thick shrubs or trees around your house, especially near windows or doors.

Avoid privacy fences as they provide easy hiding places for criminals and they are safe from being detected by anyone passing by your house.

Make sure you have good exterior lighting. A very good option is a motion sensor floodlight, as it will immediately let you know that something is going on.

Keep your car in the garage, especially if it is a new or expensive model, and keep your garage locked.

It is a good idea to avoid exposing your assets inside the house through a window.  It is very easy for passers-by to see what you have, and is an open invitation to any would-be intruder.  Keeps curtains or blinds closed.

If you have purchased new items, don’t just discard the boxes and packaging on the pavement.  It is a dead give-away.

Rip them up and conceal them to avoid advertising to passers-by.

Remember, no burglary is spur of the moment.  A criminal will case the neighbourhood and take note of the times when you leave and come home, how many residents there are, and whether there is anyone home at all times.

motion sensorsMake friends with your neighbours, and if any of your neighbours does not go out to work, it is a plus for you as it will make your house a risk for breaking into.

Do not leave things like ladders or wheelbarrows or any item which can be used to climb lying around.  You can be sure it will be welcomed by an intruder and make it easier for them to either get in, or to get out for a quick getaway.

A couple of dogs are a big bonus.  Even little yappers.  It is very off-putting trying to break in and a dog is barking consistently.   Little yappers are a very good addition to your security.

Don’t put up a specific security company sticker, as there are criminals who could know how to disable the security of a specific company.  Get a general generic sticker instead.

A good boundary fence with added protection like electric fence or razor wire or even a topping is your first line of defence.  Make sure you get your security as tight as possible and keep your home and family safe.

You need to keep an eye on your perimeter walls or fences to ensure that they are not being tampered with in any way.

Choose Wisely

yellow pre cast boundary wallBrick has always been the common choice for walls, being both sturdy and aesthetically pleasing, however prefab concrete has proven to be the better solution.

Concrete, in general, has great advantages over other materials when it comes to installing boundary walls or retaining walls.

There is Precast Concrete and Standard Concrete

Prefab walls are manufactured in a controlled casting environment, which makes it easier to control the mix, placement and curing.  It is cast in reusable moulds or forms which are then cured in a controlled environment and transported to the site and lifted into place.

Standard Concrete is poured into site-specific forms and cured on site.

This shows that Prefab is a really good option, as the site is cleared quickly, and the aesthetic beauty of your home is not impeded by having to wait for the concrete to cure before the site is cleaned and cleared.

The setting up of a Prefab Concrete Wall is far quicker and less messy, and you have the benefit of your property being quickly restored to it’s previous beauty.

prefabricationPrecast Concrete Walls are very durable and are resistant to mould, fire, rot and termites and other natural hazards.

There is no or very little maintenance required.

Colour can be added during the manufacturing of the Precast Concrete, so over time it is not necessary to repaint the walls as there will be no fading or flaking of paint.

With a good, deep foundation, it also prevents anyone from digging under your wall to try and gain access to your property.

Are You Covered

electric fence extentionWith the release of crime statistics in our country, it is obvious that crime has escalated at an alarming rate this past year.

Many people are looking at improving their security in a bid to prevent becoming another crime statistic.

Whether you have concrete or prefab walling, or palisades, you are able to add an electric fence as a further deterrent to would be intruders, and an electric fence has now become a common sight in South Africa.

If you wish to extend the height of your walling or fencing, then adding an electric fence is a very good option, but always ensure that the correct fence is added and that the installation is correctly done.

cctv cameraElectric fences are used to detect, deter and delay an intruder from entering your property illegally, plus a high voltage shock should be enough to discourage anyone attempting to access your property uninvited.  It also allows your back-up security company to respond timeously.

Energizers supply the fence with power and come with batteries so that they operate even when there is a power outage.

The more security you have, the safer you will be.  It is also a good idea to have infrared sensors installed.

It is advisable to install an electric fence on a wall or fence that is not less than 1.5m high as this will prevent injury to animals or children.   The electric fence should also have at least 8 strands of electric wire to discourage any attempts to tamper with it.

Should you wish to install a new wall or fence or to extend an existing one, please feel free to contact us and discuss your requirements with one of our consultants, or request a free quotation today.
